Ah yes, it’s Back to School time, that favorite time of year for many kids and parents and for others, it’s a terrible time of year.
My oldest started her Senior year in high school. So for her and us, it’s very bittersweet. For my youngest who is in elementary school, she is over the moon as that’s her socializing time as well as she simply loves school.
I learned a long time ago to NOT buy a bunch of new stuff for those first few weeks when school begins. I know you may have just said, “Um, what?”. Let me explain.
We always go through the school supply list to see what we have from last year that will still work. Many times their pencil cases, bookbags, and some supplies like folders, normally can make it over a couple of years. Whatever we don’t have left, we then go out and buy.
As far as clothes go, we buy each child a new outfit plus new tennis shoes. That way they start off the year with a new outfit. One thing I don’t do is buy several new outfits.
I know several people who disagree with me on that. They feel that the kids should at least have seven new outfits so they have a new outfit each day of the week for that first week back. That’s great if that’s how you choose to start the school year off. It just doesn’t work for us.
Our kids go back to school the second week of August. It’s still very warm outside. Their buildings have air, but they are outside playing, possibly getting glue or paint on their clothing, and many times Summer outfits that we bought earlier in the Summer still work. So I am a firm believer of getting more wear out of their Summer clothing then not.
Also, starting close to Labor Day, all of the Summer stuff starts to go on sale. For prime example, I just bought 10 shirts for my youngest from The Children’s Place for $1.99 each! Yes EACH! Plus add on their free shipping and it’s delivered right to my door. Shirts, shorts, and leggings are all on sale so now I can focus on buying Summer pieces that will work into mid Fall because it still stays pretty warm here at least through the first part of October.
Since we are about two weeks into our year, and many won’t start until after Labor Day, I thought I would put together a list of the top Back to School Essentials for 2019 that I think all of the littles must have to start their new school off right!
Back to School Clothing Essentials
The Children’s Place – They have some pretty stellar clearance sales going on now so it’s perfect to stock up on pieces that will work as layers!
Brooklyn Clothing – You must check out this company and their line of fashionable clothing pieces!
Bobbi-Toads Paintable Shoes
These are the most absolutely adorable shoes for little ones! They can even paint their shoes to match their toe nails! They have styles available in seven super cool designs that range in sizes from 11 (little kids) to size 6 (big kids). This year they also have Bobbi Dobbiez which are portable little plush buddies you can clip to your shoes or backpacks!
I know when you think about the brand, French Toast, you automatically assume uniforms but did you know that they have pieces that will also work if your little ones don’t wear uniforms? Make sure to head over to their site to check out their new styles for 2019!
Back to School Snacks
Ah, yes, snacks. Those are a requirement not only for school lunches BUT for after school snacking as well!
My youngest’s school also allows the kids to bring in a healthy snack each day so they can nosh mid afternoon to help their focus stay on school and not the fact they are hungry!
I am always looking for snacks that will not only fit the school’s requirements but snacks that the kids will actually eat!
These tasty pouches of fruit goodness are a great idea for snacking throughout the day! And the fact they are portable and can be thrown away when the kids are done, make them a great choice for school time snacking and lunches.
These superfood snacks come in six varieties; Watermelon Kiwi Burst, Pomegranate Grape Crush, Amped, Chill’n, Awesome, and Epic!
Tree Top Apple Sauce Pouches
Tree Top is going over the top for this school year due to their first-of-its-kind clear apple sauce pouches! Parents can now see inside the pouch before giving them to the kids. These pouches come in the following flavors; regular, Cinnamon Apple, Strawberry Apple, Tropical Apple, and Mango Apple. Even the big kids love these as my husband and high school take them in their lunches.
Kip’s Allergy-Friendly Snacks
This granola bark comes in two delish flavors, Cinnamon Crunch and Cocoa Crunch. One of my kids favorite ways to eat this granola bark is on top of their yogurt. It’s a great way to get them to eat food that is rich in omega-3 fatty acids and is a great source of fiber.
These snacks are also free of the top 8 allergens; such as peanuts, nuts, gluten, soy, egg, dairy, and wheat.
Wild Willett Food Fruit Flavored Jerky
When you think of healthy snacks, I’m sure that beef jerky comes to mind. What if I told you that they now also have fruit jerky!!
This was the first time that we have ever had fruit jerky before and it is actually really good! It comes in three flavors; Sassy Strawberry, Spunky Savory, and Playful Papaya.
Like regular jerky, this is easily portable and makes a great on-the-go snack.
Junkless Granola Bars
Granola bars are always a great snack option for after school or in school lunches! They don’t need to be refrigerated, the wrapper can be thrown away, and they are easy to pack in a backpack!
These tasty granola bars have no hydrogenated oils, they are NON-GMO, have no high fructose corn syrup, no artificial flavors, colors or preservatives and have 0g of trans fat.
They come in these delicious flavors; Chocolate Chip, Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip, Strawberries and Cinnamon Roll.
Back to School Essentials for Parents
Even though I work from home, there are still those after-school activity schedules that really can throw haovic with meal planning. That is why I reply heavily on my slow-cooker. I have three of them and they are life savers!
Here are a few other items that I think fit perfectly into the Back to School Must Have Essentials!
Cuisinart 4-Quart 3-in-1 Cook Central
I don’t have one of these yet, however, I think I need to invest in one! Being able to brown/sauté, slow cook, and steam? Yes, please! I am loving the 24-hour timer and the automatic Keep Warm feature so that once it’s ready to go, it will also keep it heated perfectly.
Back to School Essentials for Lunch Time
I am one of those people who actually like packing lunches for both my kids and my husband. I enjoy coming up with new ways to get them excited when they open their lunch boxes.
Sometimes I update the kids lunch boxes at the beginning of the school year. Or if there is one that they really want, we put the one from the previous year and put it in the cabinet as a backup or that one becomes the one that we use for when we take road trips and vacations.
We’ve found these super cute lunch boxes and I think you’ll agree that they will be a hit this school year!

With break-ins and robberies happing in off-campus locations across the country, smart home security camera maker, Canary, is working to combat those crimes by giving students the ability to keep an eye on their new homes, even when they’re away.
Canary has both indoor and outdoor devices to make it easier to monitor the entire space, and has an app that includes a Safety Button, which allows students to directly contact local authorities even when they’re not in their home.
