Creating bedtime routines is one of the things as a parent that is a must. Even if we always don’t follow though, it’s something we must try to do.
As a parent I know how hard it is to stick to these routines as sometimes schedules are just all over the place, but at least for us, it’s something that are kids have always loved to do.
My youngest is my snuggler. She loves snuggling with a good book at the end of the day. Those are memories and habits that I hope she continues with as she gets older.
Do you have any bedtime routines for your children? Over the years I’ve learned what works for my kids and we’ve mad a few adjustments as time as went on. One key thing I’ve learned is to forbid electronics when we are getting ready for bed time. Their mind is on that and not getting ready for bed.
TIPS FOR CREATING BEDTIME ROUTINES
1. Decide on their bedtime.
Since all children have different bed times as well as different amounts of sleep they need, decide on the time that you think would be the best. Once that’s established, start a nightly routine to coincide with that bedtime. Let’s say you decide on a 8 pm bedtime, you could start your bedtime routine around 7 pm by saying “It’s time to get ready for bed”. That way you have about an hour to get them ready for bed.
2. Clean Up!
Create a fun song or game to encourage your littles to help clean up their toys before bed.
3. Bath time!
This may not apply to each night, however, a nice warm bath is always a great way to help them relax.
4. Pajama time!
They can help pick out their favorite pajamas for the night.
4. Snack time!
Offer them a light snack that has carbs and a little bit of protein. Try to avoid anything that has a lot of sugar. After the snack is finished, it’s best to have them brush their teeth so in case they fall asleep, you don’t have to wake them up.
5. Story time!
This is honestly one of my favorite times of our nightly routine! My youngest picks out a book or two that we will read. We “snuggle up” in one of our comfy blankets and we sit and read together. A book like “Good Night, Little Blue Truck” by Alice Schertle, is absolutely perfect for a bedtime book!
6. Sleep time!
We then head to her room, turn on some white music, say our goodnights and then hopefully its a smooth transition to a restful sleep for them.
I wish I could say this works every night, but unfortunately it doesn’t. Life happens so we adjust as we need to. The key is finding out what works the best for your family.
