I stopped envying moms with time and money for weekly trips to the spa a long time ago. When they ask where I go to get my skin as soft and squeeze-your-cheeks youthful as they are, I just smile and reply, “No farther than my bathroom sink.” These are DIY spa recipes with ingredients you’ll find in your own kitchen cabinet!
Basic Honey Face Mask
Mix the honey and essential oil in the palm of your hand and massage gently over a clean face. Wear for 15 minutes and rinse off with warm water. Lavender and tea tree oil are antiseptic and great for problem skin, while chamomile is great for sensitive skin types.
Honey was Cleopatra’s youthful secret: it’s moisturizing but antibacterial, which makes it great for both dry and oily/problem skin, and it’s also full of antioxidants. Try the more expensive but most antibacterial Manuka honey (made by bees feeding off the same bush that gives us tea tree oil) for the best outcome.
Honey Yogurt Face Scrub
2 tsp organic, plain yogurt (full fat for dry skin, skim for oily skin)
2 tsp almonds or oatmeal, pulsed to a fine meal
1 tsp honey
Mix the ingredients and very gently massage over a clean face, concentrating on your forehead, nose, and other oily areas. Over-scrubbing sensitive areas like your jawline, even if you break out there, will cause irritation that can lead to more blemishes. Leave on your face for 15 minutes and rinse with warm water.
Yogurt is a natural but gentle exfoliant that stimulated blood flow. The almonds and oatmeal moisturize while digging impurities from your pores while the honey disinfects your skin.
Blend the ingredients in a bowl so the egg white dissolves completely. Apply to a clean, dry face. If you don’t have chamomile oil handy, you can use a teaspoon of chamomile tea. Let the mask dry and rinse with warm water. The clay cleans your skin, the egg protein acts as a shield, and the chamomile soothes.
Admittedly, not all of us have white clay in our cabinets! It’s okay; just drop by the gardening store for the stuff the next time you buy flowers.
Anti-Acne Apple Cider Toner
Mix the water and vinegar in a glass bottle with a plastic cap; drop in the aspirin, which are a source of anti-acne salicylic acid. Shake the bottle. Once the aspirin tablets dissolve, apply the toner to a cotton ball or pad and then to areas with acne, rough skin, or enlarged pores. Do not use on broken skin—it will sting!
Apple cider vinegar contains alpha hydroxyl-acids and, with the salicylic acid in aspirin, exfoliate problem skin naturally. Your complexion will brighten and soften with daily use after washing and prior to moisturizing. If the mixture is still too powerful for your skin, dilute with more water. Keeps in a refrigerator for a month.
Easy Body Scrub
Stir the ingredients in a screw top jar with a long spoon or fork. Leave it (top on) for 24 hours before apply to areas of your body needing exfoliation, like elbows, knees, legs, etc. Massage onto your skin for a few minutes and then shower off.
Honey Olive Oil Hair Mask
2 tbsp honey
1/8 cup to ¼ cup olive oil (depending on hair length and thickness)
Mix the ingredients in a bowl or cup and massage into hair. Put on a shower cap and try taking a Cleopatra bath (just add ½ cup of milk or cream and ¼ cup of honey into a warm bath) before shampooing and conditioning 30 minutes later.
