How To Be A Snow Day Hero + Giveaway
Keeping kids both active and content can be a major challenge when winter hits and snow days keep everyone indoors. Hearing “school is cancelled” can instantly make a parent anxious, wondering “Am I already going to break my resolution to spend more time with the kids without going bonkers?!“. We all want the same thing: to be a snow day hero.
How To Be A Snow Day Hero
Fortunately, there are plenty of activities that kids can do indoors on cold, snowy days. These 6 ways to be a snow day hero are a great and easy blend of education, imagination and entertainment.
#1 Family Baking
Cooking is fun for all ages, but it can be especially helpful on snow days when you’re stuck inside. Children will not only love creating something tasty that day, but it may also help them develop a lifelong love of being in the kitchen. Of course children can learn all types of cooking from stove top to oven, but baking is a great place to start because of how tactile it is. It’s always fun getting your hands dirty!
#2 Create Family Comic Books
Challenge your kids to make their own comic books. Arm them with paper, rulers, markers, pencils and any other art supplies that they’ll need to bring their ideas to life. If your kids aren’t familiar with comic books, take the time to show them a few online.
Once everyone has finished their creative project, let each person present his or her masterpiece. You can even give them all special awards for creativity and skill. Reading comic books together is the perfect time to roll out the hot cocoa.
#3 Stock Up On Books & Games
Books — a childhood favorite for over a hundred years for a reason – everyone loves them. They can be read alone, curled on the couch. They can be read aloud for a group activity. And, on snowy days, they can exercise a child’s imagination while allowing them some quiet, downtime.
Activity Books — Crosswords for older kids, and connect the dots for younger. One new book that parents and kids will both love: Paint By Sticker. No crayons needed. Just peel and stick these number-coded stickers to recreate art classics or robots and dinosaurs. We’ve finished three editions so far in our house. It’s our favorite “calm down, wind down” activity together.
Board Games are obviously a necessity. Instead of worrying over video game time or rummaging for batteries needed in newer games – try some of the classic favorites that you played as a child.
#4 Fun Snack Time
If your kids are anything like mine, the first thing you hear is “I’m bored”…followed soon by “I’m hungry.” Of course you fed them. Of course they aren’t starving. But they want snacks! Instead of tossing them a bag of chips (which we love…no chip hate here!) make snack time an activity! How? Popcorn!
Remember when your mom or dad had to actually POP the popcorn for movie night? There was something awesome about watching the kernels start to snap open. Instead of ready made snacks, use an Air Popcorn Popper and add your own toppings. You’ve got something tasty AND fun (and healthy too!)
#5 Easy To Make Hot Meals

#6 Make A Movie
You might not want your kids spending their day in front of the television, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make your own TV show. Have everyone work on the script and determine who will be the director. If you made comic books earlier in the day, you can borrow your story line from one of these. After having all the kids run through the script once or twice, use your smartphone, tablet or digital camera to film it. Older children will love polishing the final cut with easy-to-use, video editing software. You and your little ones can grab the fresh popcorn you made and curl up to enjoy this work of art together.
