I am really excited that Disney has started releasing the cast information  for the live action version of Mulan that will be in theatres tentatively in March 2020!

Have you ever watched Mulan before?  There is actually an interesting fact about Mulan that you may not have realized.  That fact is that she wasn’t a Princess, NOR did she fall in love with a Prince!  She’s not the traditional Disney Princess!

As a Mom, I think one of the reasons I really like Mulan is because she is very relatable.  She wasn’t a princess, she was just a simple village girl.  She decides to join the army, so her Father didn’t have to.  She proved herself as capable of a warrior as her colleagues.

Mulan originally hit the theatres in 1998.  In the original version of Mulan, Ming-Na Wen, played Mulan and also starring in the original movie were actors, B.D. Wong (Li Shang) and Eddie Murphy (MuShu).

One of my favorite quotes from the movie is, “The flower that blooms late is the most rate and beautiful of all”

Will this Mulan be like the original 1998 movie?  From what I’ve been reading, I don’t think so at all.  I think this one will be closer to the Chinese legend.  According to the casting call, Disney’s Mulan is “filmed in 7th century China, which would have been around 630 AD.

From what I’ve been reading online about the new version of Mulan, here is the info I’ve found:

Mulan Live Action Version 2020 Directors:

Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver are writing the live action version of Mulan.

Mulan Live Action Version 2020 Cast:

Mulan – Liu Yifei has been cast as Mulan according to the Hollywood Reporter¹.  She is from Wuhan, which is in the Hubei Province in China.  By the way, we spent time in Wuhan several years ago.  It was such a wonderful experience as well as a beautiful city!

Li Shang – this version will not have Li Shang in it.

Chen Honghui – which is supposedly her new love interest, will be played by Yoson An.

Commander Tung –  will be played by Donnie Yen.

Witch – the witch will be played by Gong Li.  She will be the villain this time.

Emperor – will be played by Jet Li.

Interesting Facts About the Chinese Legend of Mulan:

  • In the Ballard of Mulan, while in the Army, she met and fell in love with Jin Yong.  There was also no cricket or Mushu.
  • Another interesting fact in Chinese legend is that the “real” Li Shang died in 180 BC.  He was a general and minister of the Western Han Dynasty.
  • According to Chinese legend, there was a young lady named “Hua Mulan”.  In the movie, she went by “Fa Mulan”.
  • Hua Mulan, according to legend, lived during the Northern Wei Dynasty, which was 420 – 589.

Live Action Mulan 2020 Information:

  • Unfortunately, it looks like in the updated version, there will be no MuShu, Shan Yu or the Huns.
  • It also looks like this will be a non-singing version unlike the original.
  • However, it does look like she may have a Sister.

Until I see the actual updated version, I can’t honestly say if I will like the movie or not.  I am really looking forward to the movie and seeing what path that Disney took Mulan in.  What do you think so far of the information about the new version of Mulan?
