For the past four days I’ve been hard to find online. But don’t feel bad! I was building a new house, exploring the neighborhood, getting married, having a baby…. Well, my sim was.
Smarter Sims, Weirder Stories, Vibrant Neighborhoods
The Sims™ 4 is out and I’ve been knee deep in creating new, fun characters. I’ve been a fan of The Sims™ since the original was released fourteen years ago. I can remember spending hours building houses, creating people (and trying my best to land a Sim boyfriend….not as sad as it sounds). In 2002 I joined The Sims™ Online which as a role playing version of the game where other characters were actual people across the world. I first met one of my best friends at her sim house online and we still joke about how unconventional our meeting was.
The Sims™ has evolved so much since then. The building is more detailed, the sims are more realistic and the interactions are more involved. With The Sims™ 4 it’s been taken up yet another notch.
In The Sims™ 4, there are new Sims with new personalities. They are smarter, more realistic and more aware; reacting and acting according to how they feel and what they need. They have traits, skills, and aspirations that affect their behavior like an (almost) real person. Now you don’t have to click buttons to find out how your Sim feels – they express it in more natural ways like the expression on their face and the way they walk.
The new Create-A-Sim screen gives you even more control over your sim’s appearance than ever before. Not only are the traditional features there: hairstyle, eyes, clothing etc. But, now you can also use Detail Edit Mode to change even the shape and placement of their features and body. Make a nose longer or a waist thicker. Now your sim can look even more like you, famous characters or anything you can dream up.
I love how the sims have gotten much better at balancing autonomous actions and just acting plain crazy. My sims are fun to watch as they give themselves a pep talk in the mirror after a hard day, but I don’t have to worry about them running away (literally) in the middle of a conversation. Great Update: Multitasking – Now you can do more than one thing at once. For example, you can sip your drink at the bar while you chat with your friends. Feel like talking sports while you work out at the neighborhood gym? No need to get off the treadmill, just chat with the sim running next to you.
Buy, Build or Create
One of my favorite activities is gardening. You can buy starter seeds to grow in the ground, pots or plant boxes. You can even grow plants indoors. Once you study more about gardening you can take cuttings and graft plants to create new vegetables, fruits and flowers. If you aspire to be a botanist, you can even take a sample and examine it under the microscope.
Building your dream home (or homes?) is also even better than ever. With improvements to foundations, decor, lighting and more – almost anything is possible. Well, except swimming. Sorry – no pools in this version. If you’re like me, you’ll end up building houses just for fun.
Sharing – The Sims™ 4 has made it easier than ever before to share your Sim world with friends. You can share what you create or use creations shared by others online. With the new Gallery function, uploading and downloading creations is easier than ever before.
It’s a Bouncing Baby Boy
Once your sim becomes pregnant you won’t be able to take your eyes off the game. If your sims try for a baby, keep watch for your soon-to-be mommy to stop what she’s doing and make a mad dash for the toilet. Morning sickness is common and -ew- obvious in The Sims™ 4 (Don’t forget to clean the toilet afterwards). If you don’t want to wait for your sim’s tummy to get bigger, you can also take a pregnancy test in your bathroom.
Labor time! Delivery comes without notice and you’ll have 2 hours to get to the hospital or buy a crib and have a home birth. Once your bouncing bundle of joy arrives, you’ll also have the option to breast or bottle feed.
As your sims age, you’ll soon have a rambunctious child on your hands. (No toddlers, like in The Sims™ 3. I was disappointed) Children have their own set of needs and aspirations. There won’t be much time left in the day after school, homework and play. But, make sure you sit down for a family meal with plenty of conversation.
