Yes and no. It will depend on what type of blog you want to start.
Are you ready to get started? Here are the steps on How to Start a Successful Blog.
- Decide on a Niche
- Write down name ideas and Decide on a domain name
- Figure out a blog theme
- Decide on hosting
- Get your blog up and running
- Write posts
- Promote your blog
- Sign up for affiliates
- Keep producing content
Step #1: DECIDE ON A NICHE
Deciding on a niche is honestly the first most critical step when decided to start a new blog. You may be thinking why this is more important than deciding on what your new blog name will be.
Since your blog will be all about you, you have to make your blog your own voice. What are you passionate about? Is there enough interest in what you are wanting to blog about? Will this blog be just a hobby, or will it be to make money?
To figure out what niche your blog should be about, make a list of what you are the most passionate about.
Think about your hobbies, what foods you enjoy and your experiences.
Do you want to write about your life experiences? Have you dealt with things that have defined you and your life? If that is the case, then you may want to be a Lifestyle Blogger.
Is travel your jam? Could you write 1,000 plus posts about travel? If so, then your calling may be to become a Travel Blogger.
Are you vegan, vegetarian? Is creating unique desserts your favorite thing to do? Then you make be a Food Blogger in the making.
The key thing to remember about deciding on your nice is that since your blog will be your voice and your platform, your goal is to develop a resource that your readers will know that you are the go-to for.
Some of the different types of blogging niches are:
- Camping/Full-time RV Living
- Gardening Pets
If you aren’t sure what your niche should be, do some research online. Are people searching for tips that your blog could provide? If not, then your best bet may be to look at a different subject.
STEP #2: NARROWING DOWN A NAME AND DECIDING ON A DOMAIN NAME
Of course, that should be an easy thing to do, right? It’s honestly harder than you think.
Before you buy your domain, make sure to do these steps first:
Write down all of the names that you are considering.
Think about your blog long term and if you decide to sell your blog, would the name work for everyone? If you name your blog, “myname.com” would someone want to buy your name?
Do a domain search. Is your name available? Has someone already established a blog with a similar name?
Check to make sure the name you are wanting isn’t already trademarked.
Make sure the socials aren’t already taken.
After you have gone through those steps, if your name is available, then buy your domain. This would also be the best time to decide on your email address. Will it be firstname.lastname@example.org? Or email@example.com.
Once you have bought your domain and set up your email. Now is the time to lock in those social channels.
Even if having social channels aren’t on your radar right now, go ahead and set up your Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, and YouTube channels.
STEP #3: TIME TO FIGURE OUT YOUR BLOG THEME
Many types of hosting providers such as GoDaddy and WordPress offer free themes. Do you want one of those? Or are you looking for something with more spark and pizazz?
If you are wanting a more customized theme, then check out Studio Press or Restored 316.
This is also when you should think about your logo. There are a lot of premade logos or you can find one on Fiverr or Etsy.
STEP #4: DECIDING ON HOSTING
Before you decide on the hosting you want to go with on your new blog, first, you will need to decide what type of blog you will have.
Do you want a free blog such as one that is hosted with WordPress.org? Or do you want to have a self-hosted blog?
If you are strictly planning to do a hobby blog and not make any money, then a hosted blog is fine to start with. However, keep in mind that if you are planning on adding affiliates or ads to your blog, you won’t be able to do that on one of these sites. You will have to be self-hosted to monetize your blog.
STEP #5: GET THE BLOG UP AND RUNNING
Now that you’ve decided on your host, what theme you will use, and how you want it to look. Start designing your blog. Many themes are pretty easy to navigate.
However, if you prefer to hire someone, there are a lot of great web designers out there.
STEP #6: NOW IS THE TIME TO START WRITING/CREATING
Now it’s time to start writing!
If you are going to be creating recipes, get to work on your recipes and photos. If you are planning on doing a blog on DIY projects, get those projects going.
The best advice is to have at least 10 posts live before you start promoting your blog. And why you ask? Because if you start getting traffic to your site, you want to be able to give your readers substance. One or two posts aren’t going to do it. You want to give your readers a variety of things to look at.
STEP #7: PROMOTE YOUR BLOG
If you think that just by publishing posts the readers will come, then I hate to inform you that that isn’t going to happen.
There are millions of blogs out there and possibly hundreds in the niche you choose. You will be starting at the bottom in terms of domain authority and rank. So, you will have to get busy and start promoting right away!
Share your blog posts with your friends and family and ask them to share. Get your social channels going and showcase your work on there.
You will want to set up some time of Social Media Schedule so you can keep track of all of your posts and when you are promoting them.
STEP #8: SIGN UP FOR AFFILIATES
Now is the time to also start looking at the affiliates that you want to promote through your blog posts if you are planning to monetize your blog.
Will your projects have materials that you can order from Amazon? If so, then sign up for their affiliate program. If you are a craft blogger, then an affiliate with companies such as Michaels or Joann’s maybe more of what you are looking for. Flex Offers is a wonderful affiliate program to work with. I’ve had several profitable affiliate relationships with many of their advertisers.
Be prepared that at first, these programs may turn you down. Some require that your blog be live for at least a few months before they let you become a part of their network.
STEP #9: KEEP PRODUCING CONTENT
You will need to decide on what your posting schedule will be like. Are you going to write one post a week? Or write once a month?
There are a lot of reasons to keep creating new blog content and we will get more into that in additional posts; however, the most important reason is that Google loves new content.
If you think you can just produce 10 to 20 posts, never update them, or keep things current, unfortunately, that’s not how it works.
Another great timesaver when you are running a blog is Co-Schedule! It’s a great way to keep track of everything!
And those are the steps of How to Start a Successful Blog. Are you ready to get started?
