📚History Behind the Recipe

Spam, which has been around since the Great Depression, has held steady as a budget-friendly ingredient in so many recipes.

This unique ingredient was invented Jay Hormel, whose father, George, founded the Hormel Company. They needed to figure out what to do with pork shoulder, which at that time wasn’t considered a desirable cut of pork.

When the military was looking for filling meals that were inexpensive during WW II, the US shipped over 100 million cans overseas to the troops.

Make sure to read this article about Spam written by the Smithsonian Magazine. There is also a vintage ad in this article that’s pretty cool.
