meatloaf on a white platter with mashed potatoes and corn.

There is a secret ingredient that was once used in many recipes that really helps enhance the flavor. This meal can be prepared quickly and will be ready in less than an hour. Your family will love this delicious recipe and they won't complain about the meatloaf being dry anymore.

If you are looking for additional vintage dinner recipes, check out this classic Ham and Scalloped Potatoes meal idea or if you are looking for a quick sandwich, our Spoon Burgers is another delicious recipe to consider.

    [feast_advanced_jump_to]

    🥘Ingredients

This is just a brief breakdown of the ingredients needed. To get the measurements, go down to the bottom of the post and you will find them in the recipe card.

Ingredients to make tomato soup meatloaf
    • Ground beef
    • Kosher salt
    • Black pepper
    • Dry powdered milk
    • Egg
    • Tomato soup
    • Panko
    • Onion

    🔪Instructions

There are no step-by-step photos as when you are making meatloaf, you are literally mixing everything together in a bowl and putting it into a loaf pan.

    🧾Substitutions

    • Breadcrumbs - if you prefer using saltines or breadcrumbs instead of panko, that is fine.
    • Onion powder - if you don't have any onions, you can use onion powder instead. Refer to the bottle to see what the correct ratio would be as each brand is different.
    • Ground beef - I used 80/20, however, you can use 70/30. You may have more grease though when it's baking so keep that in mind.

    📖Variations

    • Ketchup on top - As a topping for my meatloaf, I typically include a blend of brown sugar and ketchup. This is simply our family's preference. If you have a different topping preference, you can add that as well.

    Sides

One of the great things about serving meatloaf for dinner is all of the sides that work so well together with the meatloaf.

    • Mashed potatoes and gravy
    • Baked macaroni and cheese
    • Scalloped potatoes
    • Roasted vegetables such as a mix of peas and carrots.
    • Green beans
    • Cornbread
    • Sourdough bread
    • Pea Salad
    • Side salad
    • Fruit gelatin

    🍽Equipment

One of the best things about making meatloaf is that it requires very few pieces of equipment. And the best thing to use to mix everything together is your hands.

    • cutting board
    • knife
    • loaf pan

    🥫Storage

You can store the leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to four days.

And freezing it will depend on how you defrosted the meat beforehand. As long as you defrosted it in the fridge and then made it into the meatloaf, you can freeze in a freezer safe bag or container for up to two months. If you defrosted the meat on the counter then made the meatloaf, it's best not to freeze it.

    💭Top tips

To prevent a big mess in the oven when you are making meatloaf, always put a baking sheet on the rack below the loaf pan so it can catch any of the grease that overflows.

If you use higher content beef, which has a lower fat content, you may get a drier or grainy meatloaf. Don't use any higher than 80/20.

To prevent the meatloaf from being too dense, do not overmix the mixture together. Just mix everything until it's moistened.

    👩🏻‍🍳FAQ

Do I need to put foil over the meatloaf?

No, it's normally not needed. However, if you feel it's getting too burnt, feel free to loosely tent the foil over it.

    What to serve with meatloaf

There is nothing better than a side of mashed potatoes, gravy, and corn. Nice and simple. You could also serve up fresh green beans.

    📚History Behind the Recipe

One of our readers was looking for an old meatloaf recipe that her Mom used to make. She couldn't find the recipe card but remembered that it had tomato soup and dry powdered milk. I went through all of the cookbooks I had and found a couple of recipes that used tomato soup and some that used dry milk. But none that used both. Maybe it was a delicious recipe her Mother put together herself. Regardless of how she came up with it, according to my crew, it's the best meatloaf ever.

According to Bon Appétit, the first recipe on record for meatloaf is from 1870. And it may have also been around since as early as the 5th century in Rome.

    [feast_advanced_jump_to]

When I was younger, one of my favorite things was waiting for the big Sears Wish Book to arrive in the mail! There was nothing like spending a few hours going through each page and dreaming of what you might find under the tree. Now thanks to the internet those holiday catalogs are mainly a thing of the past, however, we still get a few different catalogs from Amazon and Walmart that our kids love looking through.

While how we discover the newest and hottest must have gift ideas, I think we can all agree, there's nothing like wondering what gifts we will find awaiting us under the tree.

    Gift Ideas for the Guys

If you have a guy in your life, then you know how hard they are to buy for. If they are anything like my husband, he gets what he wants himself so it's exactly what he wants. Sure, he loves silly socks and anything the kids make for him, but when it comes to bigger gifts, he's never had a problem with either getting what he wanted, or he'll give me some ideas and I will pick the gifts up.

We've put together a fun guide of some gift suggestions that any man on your list would love.

If you aren't familiar with Solo Stove, then take a few minutes to check out their site. Whether the guys in your life love to grill, sit outside by the fire, or love to go camping, you will definitely find something on the site they would love.

We have the Pi Oven, the Bonfire, and a Mesa, which we love. I highly recommend a heat deflector though if you get a Bonfire. That way the heat is deflected towards your heat so even your legs are nice and toasty.

We have had ice cream delivered from eCreamery before and it's so creamy and it comes in a variety of flavors.

    Stanley Tumblers

This is one of those trends that looks like it will still be around for a while. If you have a teen or even a friend on your list who loves these tumblers, then perhaps consider adding to their collection.

    Yeti Tumblers

Of course, there is still the debate of which tumblers are better. So, if you have a team Yeti fan, then definitely pick up one of these tumblers for them.

Do you like wearing sleep masks but find your current one isn't quite making the grade? Can you see light through it? Does it put pressure on your eyes? If so, then this is a mask to check out.

We have personally put this mask to the test and it's a definite winner.

Their newest items are the Sheec ComFits socks. These are Day-to-Night, High-Tech Performance Socks.

    Top Gift Ideas for Kids

I know this is a really broad area for many of us as really the top gifts will depend on the ages of our kids and what they like to play with, however, I will narrow down some specific areas that will cover the biggest range of kiddos.

    Gamers

In our family, the new Nintendo Super Mario Wonders game for the Switch is a must! We pre-ordered it for our youngest and she absolutely loves it. So, if you have a Mario fan, this is one to go ahead and buy so you have it.

    Advent Calendars

Who doesn't love receiving an advent calendar? Back in the day, they were pretty basic with just a piece of chocolate or a little mini ornament. Now you can get anything from alcohol, pet treats, makeup, and toys; just to name a few.

Even though there are countless gifts that you can buy for your child's teacher or the teacher in your life, there are a few things that every teacher will absolutely love!

Teaching is a Work of Heart Sticker Book

    Teach, Love, and Inspire Notebooks

This notebook set is a must have for any teacher. And what makes this set even better is that it will fit nicely in their teaching bag.

    Teacher Tote Bag

Every teacher, para, or school staff member needs a roomy bag that is full of pockets, fashionable, and will also hold their laptop. I received one of these bags as a gift from my family and I absolutely love it!

    Carhartt Legacy East West Tote

I also decided to buy a black tote bag, so I had both a blue and a black bag. Can I just say I absolutely love this bag?! It's sturdy, has great straps, and it holds so much! And its extra durable which makes it even better. It also has over 1300 5-star reviews on Amazon so I figured it would be a great bag.

Cafe Grumpy's Mug + Coffee Combo

Normally I would say the last thing the teacher in your life needs is another mug, however, this is such a fun set that I know they will love it. This set has everything a teacher needs to start off their day! You will a wonderful bag of coffee that will help provide them with a little pep to start off the day, a fun and useable tote that they can either keep in their car or use in the classroom, and of course the Grumpy face mug.

    The Squared Paper Co

This gift idea is not only a gift idea for the teacher in your life, but even for a special someone in your life.

The Squared Paper Co has a large selection of planners and journals that were made for those who have ADHD.

    For the Planner Lover

If you have someone on your gift list that loves to use a planner, then this planner sticker book is for them! There are 2,650 stickers in this little book that will not only help organize your life but inspire as well.

Gifts for the Breast Cancer Warrior

If you have someone in your life who is currently going through a journey with breast cancer, then this section is for you. I have watched several people I know go through it and even though I really can't help them through the treatments and procedures, I love creating a little gift basket for them with a few small little things that hopefully can provide a bit of comfort to them.

I normally will add a cozy throw if I know they will be having chemo treatments. I also add a journal and a pen if I know they like to journal. Some other things are hand lotion, moisturizing lip balm, and maybe a prayer cross if I know they have a strong belief in their faith. Those are very basic things, but they are things that I have seen those warriors I know use and that they appreciated the most.

BeeSpa's Total Body is a great gift set to include in your basket. The Hand + Foot cream is ultra-hydrating, and the body cream feels like silk.

    For Busy Families

    Soul Food Starters

If you have adult children who have families of their own, then this is a gift for them that the whole family will love. As parents, the last thing we want to do seven nights a week is to figure out what we are making for dinner. That's why Soul Food Starters is such a great idea! These are pre-proportioned seasoning mixes, have easy instructions, and they are a meal hack that any parent will love AND actually use.

    Gifts for the Book Lover

If you have a book lover in your life, then you know many of them love the classics. Whether it be Little Women, Pride and Prejudice, or a great collection of works by Edgar Allan Poe. Regardless of what they love to read, I have a couple of classic stories that I think belong in every family library.

When you are parent, there is no better way to spend time with your kids than reading a book together. Even when they are older, it's still a great way to unplug, relax, and still spend time together.

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in 20 Minutes a Day

This is a fantastic book! The fact you can spend literally 20 minutes a day, reading this book together, is such a great idea! Definitions are in the margins and there are questions at the end of each chapter. They have more than just this title so if this one really isn't your thing, there are other titles to choose from.

The Illustrated Edgar Allan Poe - 20 essential poems

If you are a fan of Edgar Allan Poe's works, then this book is for you. There are also key notes in the margins to help you get more out of this story. This is really a classic must have for any library or kid's library.

Two wooden bowls full of chili with ground beef, tomatoes, and kidney beans

This Old-Fashioned Chili recipe is full of flavor and uses basic ingredients like tomato juice, barbeque sauce, ground beef, and kidney beans. If you’re looking for an old-style chili recipe that is robust, zesty and delicious, then this recipe is perfect for you.

Two wooden bowls full of chili with ground beef, tomatoes, and kidney beans

Chili is one of those vintage recipes that can be made in a variety of ways. Cooks throughout the years have added unique ingredients to create their own spin on a basic pot of chili like brisket, sausage, smoked sausage, cinnamon, and celery.

One of the most unique recipes for chili is the Ohio famous Cincinnati Chili. Another retro recipe is our easy to make Slim Jim Chili. If you are looking for a totally different and unique spin on chili, then bookmark our Chili with Kielbasa. Check out our post on Chili Recipes that use Ground Beef for more inspiration.

    • diced tomatoes

    • paprika

I didn't do step by step process photos as to make this recipe, all you need to do is brown the ground beef and add all of the ingredients then into a large pot.

    🧾Substitutions

    • BBQ sauce - you can elect to not use this ingredient up to you.
    • Onions - you can use a couple of teaspoons of onion powder if you don't have regular onions.

    💭Top tip

Since chili is the best the next day, serve it up with pasta, drained and over nachos and topped with cheese.

    👩🏻‍🍳FAQ

What is the best ground beef to use for chili?

I think the best is an 80/20 blend. However, if you can't find that, use a 70/30 hamburger mixture. You may have to scrape the fat off the next day when you remove it from the fridge to reheat.

How do I flavor hamburger for chili?

If you have leftover bacon grease, put a little bit into the skillet so that the ground beef can cook in the grease. It really brings a wonderful flavor.

    📚History Behind the Recipe

I found this recipe taped into a cookbook called "Hoosier " that I found at a vintage shop. The previous owner had written "excellent" so I knew we had to try it.

We are trying to find the original source for the recipe.

    Tequila Sunrise Cocktail

    Oct 18, 2023 · Leave a Comment

2 collins glasses full of orange juice, vodka, ice, grenadine syrup, and cherries

The classic Tequila Sunrise cocktail, which consists of grenadine syrup, tequila, and orange juice, is a stunningly beautiful drink due to the distinct separation of orange juice and syrup, making it a refreshing and uniquely fruity beverage.

2 collins glasses full of orange juice, vodka, ice, grenadine syrup, and cherries

If you are looking for some unique beverages for your parties or for simply sipping on while relaxing in the comfort of your home, this old-fashioned cocktail will become a favorite. You can also use grenadine syrup in our Roy Rogers Drink and our Shirley Temple Mocktail.

    [feast_advanced_jump_to]

    🥘Ingredients

    • Orange Juice
    • Tequila
    • Grenadine
    • Ice

    See recipe card for quantities.

    🔪 Instructions

You will find the complete instructions in our recipe guide at the bottom of the page.

    Ice in two collins glasses

    Add the ice.

Pouring the orange juice into a glass.

Add the Tequila and orange juice.

    Adding the grenadine

    Slowly add the grenadine.

Garnish with an orange slice and/or maraschino cherries

    Top with the garnish.

    🧾Substitutions

    • Juice - in lieu of orange juice, feel free to use pineapple juice or tropical juice.

    📖Variations

    • Mocktail - In lieu of the tequila, add sparkling water, non-alcoholic sparkling wine, or sparking white grape juice.
    • Sweeter - you can use SunnyD instead of regular orange juice.

    🍽 Equipment

You can use any type of glass, but a tall collins glass works the best as it creates a really lovely cocktail. Also, you will need a jigger so you can accurately measure out the ingredients.

    🥫Storage

You can make this in advance, except don't add the grenadine. Due to how easy it is to make this cocktail, it's best to wait and make it right before you serve it.

    • After you add the grenadine, do not stir or shake the drink or you'll lose the gradient effect that makes this vintage cocktail so beautiful.

    🔎The History Behind This Beverage

The original version of the Tequila Sunrise is believed to date back to the 1930s. It appears that Gene Sulit, who was a bartender at the Arizona Biltmore Hotel, created the original. The original version contains crème de cassis, tequila, and lime juice in a Collins glass topped with club soda and garnished with a maraschino cherry and lime wheel.

Then when The Rolling Stones came to the states for their 1972 tour kickoff party, Mick Jagger tried the cocktail for the first time and became a fan. Then once his crew started ordering it all over the states while they toured, it became a hit. And if you are familiar with the band The Eagles, they recorded a song called, "Tequila Sunrise" the following year and as they say, the rest is history.

    ⭐FAQ

What is the difference between a Tequila Sunrise and Tequila Sunset?

The sunset uses grapefruit juice, and the sunrise uses orange juice.

Why does the grenadine go to the bottom of the drink?

Due to there being more sugar in the grenadine, it will slowly flow to the bottom of the glass, which create s beautiful drink and causes it to look like a sunrise.

How do you garnish the Tequila Sunrise?

All you do is add a maraschino cherry and an orange slice.

Can I make a Tequila Sunrise Mocktail?

Yes! You can totally make this drink non-alcoholic! In lieu of the tequila, add sparkling water, non-alcoholic sparkling wine, or sparking white grape juice.

    📖 Recipe

    Tequila Sunrise Cocktail

The classic Tequila Sunrise cocktail, which consists of grenadine syrup, tequila, and orange juice, is a stunningly beautiful drink due to the distinct separation of orange juice and syrup, making it a refreshing and uniquely fruity beverage.

Love Letter Cookies on a white and red plate

These Love Letter Cookies are a sweet way to give your loved ones a love letter. These old-fashioned cookies are flaky, buttery, full of citrus flavor, and scrumptious, and they are very easy to make. If you are looking for a new treat to make this year for Valentine's, this is one to consider.

Love Letter Cookies on a white and red plate

This is one of those vintage cookie recipes that you will be able to use throughout the year. Even though in the cookbook they are referred to as "Love Letters", you could really use them for any occasion.

If you are looking for more old-fashioned cookies, make sure to check out our Old-Fashioned Lemon Cookies made with Bisquick, our Snickerdoodles, and our Butter Shortbread Cookies.

    [feast_advanced_jump_to]

    📖 The Original Receipt

The recipe can be located on page 29 of the Betty Crocker Cooky Book.

The ingredients used in the original recipe are:

    • 2 cups of Gold Medal Flour
    • ½ cup of sugar
    • 1 tsp. salt
    • 1 cup butter or margarine
    • 2 teaspoon finely grated lemon rind
    • finely grated rind of 1 orange
    • ½ cup commercial sour cream

Then the cookies were baked in a HOT oven of 475 degrees and made about 4 dozen of cookies.

    📖 About the Cookbook

If you are looking for a new cookbook that is full of vintage cookies, then this Betty Crocker Cooky Book may be worth considering.

Home bakers back in 1963 didn't have the internet to rely on. They were self-taught and often used a pinch of this and a pinch of that. Cookbooks from that time period didn't have many pictures (if any) and definitely no in-process photos. Baking and cooking back then required using your imagination.

    🥘Ingredients

The recipe card located at the bottom of the post contains a comprehensive list of ingredients.

Ingredients to make Love Letter Cookies
    • All-purpose flour
    • White granulated sugar
    • Kosher salt
    • Sour cream
    • Pure vanilla extract
    • Unsalted butter
    • Lemon zest
    • Orange zest
    • Turbinado sugar (optional)

    🔪 Instructions

The complete instructions are provided in the recipe card below.

To create the desired shape, the dough should be flattened and cut with a pastry wheel.

Use the pastry wheel to draw lines on the envelope.

Here is a photo that shows the lines in more detail.

    Love Letter Cookies

    🧾Substitutions

    • Self-rising flour -If using self-rising flour, it is unnecessary to add salt.
    • Salted butter - If using salted butter, avoid adding additional salt.
    • Lite sour cream - I used regular, however, feel free to sub as needed.

    📋Variations

    • Easter - make these into fun Spring cookies by using Easter themed cookie cutters.
    • Sprinkles - add sprinkles to the tops of the cookies before baking them.
    • Hearts - to add a decorative touch, sprinkle sanded sugar on the hearts before baking.
    • Any occasion - just switch out your cookie cutters or free hand draw any design you wish.

    🍽Equipment

One of my favorite things about this recipe is that you probably already have all of the supplies needed to make this recipe.

Some key pieces that will definitely help it go smoother is a pastry wheel. I use mine more than I thought I would. Another piece of equipment that I have slowly been changing out in my kitchen is my bakeware. I have been switching to the Nordic Ware baking sheets and I absolutely love them. Nice and even baking and they clean up nice too.

    🥫Storage

These will last up to five days on the counter in an airtight container. I haven't tried freezing them yet, however, I will and update this post.

    💭Top tips

    • Keep sticks of frozen butter in your freezer. Grating the frozen butter into your recipes makes a world of difference.
    • The original recipe called for an oven temp of 475. That bakes really hot, and you have to watch your cookies like crazy. I lowered it to 375 and even though it took a bit longer, they didn't burn as easily on the bottom.
    • Make sure to use the scoop with a spoon and level with a knife method when measuring out your flour.

    FAQ

Can I use self-rising flour instead?

Yes, you can. However, make sure to add the salt and baking powder so you get the rise you are looking for.

Could I use icing to frost the cookies instead?

Absolutely! You can decorate these any way you want.

What can I use instead of parchment paper?

You can use silicone mats to line your baking sheets instead.
